Josef Dettlinger , Marienaltar: Detail, the Nativity

In an archaizing style, the artist has put together an odd combination of items from the old iconography. The wall that separated the shepherds from the scene in late medieval and Renaissance Nativities now separates the animals and St. Joseph, who holds the candle mentioned in St. Bridget's vision. The shepherds and their dog are inside the stable and looking rather jaunty. Mary kneels to adore the baby, who is not entirely naked.
